How to Manage Time Wisely for the Busy Working Mother

How to Manage Time Wisely for the Busy Working MotherHow to Manage Time Wisely for the Busy Working MotherTime management can be a difficult skill to master. In fact, many working mothers agree that there simply isnt enough time in the day to get everything done. Even the most organized working mom can become stressed out when short on time. You manage a quadruple workload daily. You try to take good care of yourself (aka self-care), youwant to take care of your family well, you have a home to keep clean and organized, and, of course, you want a career youre proud of. This heavy workload is why youre searching for the best time management strategies Well, search no more To get the most accomplished each day, use the following time management strategies on a regular basis. Make a Plan Using a Planner You know if you want to get things done you need to make a list. Making to-do lists is something youre awesome at. Its completing them that can be tricky. The key is finishing that to -do list is planning when youll do it. As well has to have the energy to do it. Youre going to need a good planner. If youre creative, start a bullet journal. This way all of your lists can be in one spot. If you dont have the time to draw out boxes try The Happy Planner by me my BIG ideas. If neither of these is what youre looking for decide what is important to you in your planner and find one that suits you. Next, take that to-do list and plan out your to-do list items. Take into account how much energy youll have prior to doing the task. Will this task exhaust you? Then before you try to finish another task, consider how much energy you have left over. When you realistically plan your time and energy you avoid frustration and produce better results. Set Priorities and Realistic Goals One of the most common time management mistakes is getting distracted and procrastinating. Good time management is all about staying focused. So, how can a busy mom get focused when theres so m uch to do? If you feel overwhelmed by your workload grab your planner, make a to-do list, then prioritize. Making this plan of attack will make you feel like things are more doable. A little bit of planning can go a long way. If youre suffering from procrastination take advice from one of the best time management gurus out there, Brian Tracy, and eat that frog. Your frog is that big task youre putting off, for whatever reason. So think about how awesome youll feel if you finish the big task. Everything else will feel so easy to do if you just ate that frog. Once you have your tasks in order stay focused. If youre working on a business presentation, dont start thinking about what youre going to cook for dinner. Instead, stay present by completing your presentation before allowing your mind to wander. If you cant stop stressing about dinner plans take a five-minute break to write down your meal plans. Then get back on track. Avoid Ineffective Multi-Tasking Many working mothers thi nk you can save time by multitasking. However, multitasking has its drawbacks when you try to complete two physical tasks at once. For example, dont try to iron your suit while helping your kids pick out an outfit something or someone will get burned to the hustle.Multitasking, however, can be effective if you choose to complete only one physical task at a time, such as making a long-awaited phone call to your mother while ironing. Separate Work and Motherhood Responsibilities One of the best time management secrets is to leave parental responsibilities at home when youre at work. Similarly, when you walk in the door after work, put on your mommy hat and leave your job responsibilities at the sekretariat. If your job requires you to take home work, such as if youre a teacher and have papers to grade, complete these tasks after the children are in bed. If you work from home, make sure there is an end to your day. You need to close your home office door and leave work. Its all abo ut being present, or mindful, in whatever role you are currently in. Finding the right way to manage your time and energy comes with practice. Youll figure out how much you can accomplish given your quadruple workload. Once you get better at certain tasks, theyll take you less time to finish. This is how you get more done

This sentence will give you complete freedom and success

This sentence will give you complete freedom and successThis sentence will give you complete freedom and successThe worst possible advice is to lower your expectations. Instead, it is far more powerful toExpect everything and attach to nothing. - Carrie Campbell- - - The recent hit film, Mollys Game, written and produced by Aaron Sorkin, is about the story of Molly Bloom. She grew up in Colorado, moved to LA, and got mixed-up in the wrong crowd. Ultimately, she found herself hosting the highest paying private poker games in the world. Its a true story and totally worth learning about.Molly couldnt be stopped. Eventually, the FBI and many other organizations were out to stop her. But she welches past her point of no return, fueled by unsustainably high dopamine hits.Molly hosted private games and her clients were the richest and most famous people in the world. The biggest surprise was that these people were terribly unhappy. They were disconnected and had no center of gravity. When y ou have all the money and fame in the world, everything can become numb - and you binnenseek bigger and bigger thrills just to feel anything. This is what Molly got sucked and absorbed into. Eventually, it all came crashing down. She was arrested, and schwefellost everything - all of her money, friends, and reputation.Complete removal of egoUntil youve lost your reputation, you never realize what a burden it was or what freedom really is. - Rhett Butler in Gone with the WindOnce she lost everything, and had to face the cold hard truth that shed made some horrible mistakes, she was free to become whoever she wanted to be.Her low was so low that she became completely devoid of ego. She started going to 12-step programs and working relentlessly on herself. She knew she was a mess. She owned-up to everything she did. Rather than seeking unsustainable dopamine hits, she realized that she needed to re-center and internalize her center of gravity. She needed to learn to sit with the discomf ort and boredom - rather than impulsively seeking any form of distraction she could find to numb and suppress the restlessness. She eventually realized that she needed a personal re-branding. She decided that the best bet for re-invention would be to have a film made of her life. After doing some research, she decided that Aaron Sorkin could do the best job. She then spent 4 months trying to get a meeting with Sorkin. That involved getting rejected over and over and over.Yet, she didnt experience any pain in all of that rejection. She was already leveled to the dust in humility. She had no ego left. She had lost BIG. She had lost everything. Her reputation was as bad as it could get. She was a felon who had shamed herself and her family. She was willing to move forward becauseShe had spent a considerable time clarifying and justifying her thesis that a movie about her life could actually be a viable optionShe followed intuitionShe went for it with abandonShe stayed connected to hersel f, her center of gravity, and those around her who had her backShe didnt let the noise get it (others will try to convince you not to pursue your dream because they dont believe they could do it or because they believe you can succeed)Eventually, she got the meeting with Sorkin. She pitched her idea. At the end of the meeting, Sorkin said, Ive never honigwein someone so down on their luck and so sure of themselves.Bloom responded, I have lost everything. I have nothing to lose. I have no ego. If you dont want to do this project, thats fine.- - - How to have raw and uninhibited performanceWhether you worry about the outcome or not, everything will turn out okay. You might as well let go of the worry. In the realm of creativity, the moment you realize you can try and fail - and that everything will be okay - then you are free to create. In an interview with Success Magazine, actor Jeremy Piven explained that as an actor, the only way to work is to go out and audition for specific r oles. The challenge most actors/actresses face is that they get in their own way. It doesnt matter how much homework theyve done. If theyre too tied to a specific result, they cant be present in the moment. They cant truly perform their art. They come off as desperate. They get in their own way. Their performance isnt what it could have been.Jeremy said that when he quit worrying about a specific result, he was able to be present during his auditions. He was able to be completely who he wanted to be. He wasnt trying to be what he thought others wanted him to be. He performed his art.If he didnt get the gig, either they didnt get it or it just wasnt the right fit. So he moves on to the next. In this way, hes able to get the jobs hes supposed to have. Hes not just trying to get anything he can get.According to Robert Kegan, Harvard Psychologist, the only way to truly experience the highest levels of transformation and conscious evolution is to detach from the need for specific outcomes .THIS specific outcomes isnt what matters. THIS outcome, regardless of what it is - win or lose - has no bearing on what youre committed to doing and being. Youre fully committed and invested. Youve already made the decision. And in your mind, you already know what you are. So THIS outcome doesnt affect any of that. You wont be derailed by success nor defeat - as most people are. Youve already made a decision. Youre committed to that decision. And you will move forward regardless of what happens here.Expect everything Attach to nothingTrain yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose. - YodaAccording to the Expectancy Theory of Motivation, three things must occur for a person to have high motivation for achieving their goalsYou must believe you can do what it takes to achieve your goal. You must believe that you know how to achieve it (you have the proper methods). Finally, you must believe that the rewards of the particular goal are personally meaningful.Napoleon Hill put it this way, Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve. If you believe you can do it, you probably can. Dan Sullivan has said, The brain can only find what its looking for. Most people assume something is impossible because thats all their mental filter allows for. Ellen Langer said, If something is presented as an accepted truth, alternative ways of thinking do not even come up for consideration.Yet, the common advice is to lower your expectations, in buchen to protect yourself from the pain of being let down.Lowing your expectations is horrible advice. The reason people are told to lower their expectations is because they dont understand the power of confidence, commitment, and expectancy. They dont realize, like Molly Bloom, that they could create the outcomes they wanted. How did Bloom do it?She internalized her center of gravity. She did the deep inner work of completely removing her ego. She faced all of her demons and faced the truth. Then, she made a committe d conclusion, removed all the external noise, and made it real. All of a sudden, shes on the Ellen show and theres a major motion picture about her life. She could maintain inner security because she was completely detached from the outcomes. She completely believed she would be successful. She could create the impossible. She expected to succeed - and her expectations and hopes were sky-high.She wanted to work with the absolute best. She held nothing back.Yet, she was completely detached from every outcome. And in fact, thats why she was able to pursue with such tenacity. The outcome didnt really matter, and paradoxically she was internally resolved to make it happen. This is freedom. To expect the best and be completely detached from whatever happens.Attachment to outcomes leads to being desperate and dissolving your personal values to get that outcome. You become unhealthily obsessed and cant stay present. When you know things will work out, and yet can be detached to whatever happens , you can live in congruence and integrity. If you succeed, youre not defined by that success. If you fail, youre not defined by that failure.Your future is bigger and better than your past.Youre constantly growing.Youre aligned.Youre clear.Youre free.ConclusionIf you attach to an outcome - whether a good or bad - you freeze your personality. The worst thing you can do for your success is get attached to what happened in the past.Prior success defines you, and stops you from re-inventing yourself in the present.Prior failure defines you, and stops you from taking bigger and bolder risks in the present.Attach to people, absolutely. But detach completely from outcomes.Expect EVERYTHING. Raise your expectations. Surround yourself with people who expect the best. According to what psychologists call, The Pygmalion Effect, people rise or fall to the expectations of those around them. The best thing you can do is surround yourself with people who hold you to a higher standard than you hol d yourself.Very few people want REAL accountability in their lives. Ive watched it. It takes a considerable amount of persuasion to convince someone to make a change THEY WANT TO MAKE in their lives. Most people resent accountability. They dont want to be pushed. They dont want high expectations. They want lower and lowering expectations. Even when they pay someone to hold them accountable. But if you want real growth - surround yourself with people who expect you to show up bigger than youve ever watched yourself show up. Surround yourself with people who see enormously more in you than you could ever see in yourself.Expect success.Attach to nothing.Play.Fail.Ready to upgrade?Ive created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. How to Know Youve Got a Great Recruiter - Spark Hire

How to Know Youve Got a Great Recruiter - Spark HireIt can be hard to know if youve found a great recruiter or a dud. While there are a lot of bad recruiters, dont be fooled into thinking that all the great ones are gone. It is still possible to find an Allstar recruiter and there are 5 key ways for you to know if youve got a really good one. 1. Your recruiter is consultative.Does your recruiter call and ask, Do you have any jobs I can fill for you? If so, then you have a bad one.A great recruiter is going to have more of a consultative approach when contacting you. Great recruiters do not just want a job order to fill. They want to build a relationship with you, understand your needs, company culture, etc. in order to find the best talent that you need.2. You receive more than just a resume. If you are working with a recruiter who only forwards resumes with no further information, then its time for you to move on.A really good recruiter is going to provide you with not only a candida te resume but also with her own personal thoughts and notes based on her interviews with the candidate. The goal in the relationship between you and your recruiter is to form a partnership focused on finding the right talent for your business. This can only be done with complete transparency between you and your recruiter. Great recruiters know this and will point out strong points of each candidate as well as any potential candidate red flags.3. Your recruiter follows up.When your recruiter sends you a candidate submission, you want her to also follow up with you to discuss the candidate. Likewise, after you have interviewed a candidate, you want a recruiter who will follow up with you afterwards in order to receive feedback and help push the process along.Great recruiters always follow up.4. Your recruiter follows through.Did your recruiter say she would send you three to four candidates for you to review by a certain date? Yes, things happen and sometimes a recruiter may overestim ate the candidate market for a certain job. However, that is no excuse for not notifying you ahead of the deadline.A great recruiter will be in constant communication with you, keeping you up to date on how the candidate search is going and informing you of any roadblocks or stucks she may be running into.Once again, a great recruiter is going to be very consultative and will want to work with you in order to help you find the right talent.5. Your candidates are well informed and prepared. When you are meeting with candidates who have thoroughly researched your company, understand exactly what you are looking for, and have a good knowledge of your companys culture and expectations youve got a great recruiter.A great recruiter is going to be thorough with each candidate submitted to you. She will make sure that the candidate understands all of the requirements and is completely prepared for your interview. What are some other ways you know you have a great recruiter?

How to treat your financial profile like your Tinder profile

How to treat your financial profile like your Tinder profileHow to treat your financial profile like your Tinder profileHave you ever worried about what a potential romantic partner might think about your financial standing? Have financial issues ever caused issues between you and your romantic partner? If you answered yes to either of those questions, youre not alone In fact, money is a leading cause of relationship strife, often being cited as a reason fordivorce. Plus, according to findings byFinder.com, 72% of Americans said they would reconsider a romantic relationship because of the other rolles debt. However, according to Experians recent consumer survey, only 31% of people believe that their financial profile will show them in a good light. Furthermore, 51% of people dont think they know enough about their own financial profile. In contrast, more than half of Experians respondents feel as though their social media and online dating profiles show them in a positive light. This is in large part due to how highly curated online profiles are.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWhy does your financial profile matter?I mentioned that a large majority of people would have second thoughts about entering into a relationship with someone who has debt. I dont necessarily agree with that sentiment, but its something to consider if youre looking for a longterm relationship. However, there are other reasons why this should be important to you that go beyond romantic love.leistungspunkt worthinessYour financial history will determine whether or not a lender wants to front money to you. This applies to leistungspunkt card companies, mortgage lenders, personal and student loan providers, car companies, and more. If your credit history looks badeanstalt, these lenders can decide not to give you a loan at all, which can limit what youre able to do with your future.Interes t ratesIf you do get approved for a loan, the interest rates on that loan will vary depending on your credit history and credit score. Depending on the size of the loan, this could cost or save you thousands of dollars. The higher your credit score, the lower your interest rate.Origination feesSometimes, if you take out a loan, youre not just paying for the loan itself and interest. There is often an origination fee added on top of it. Your credit score and credit history can determine the rate of that fee, which can save or cost you hundreds or even thousands of dollars.EmployabilityI dont agree with this, but some employers pull your credit history when considering you as an employee. If you have a negative history, this might cause you to be denied for a job. I used to work with someone who got turned away when he welches going from being a contractor to a full-time employee because of an old credit card bill he never paid.Getting an apartmentMore and more landlords and property managers are checking credit before they allow you to move into a new place. Having a good credit score and a positive credit history, to lenders and people like landlords, means youre more trustworthy. So if you have negative marks on your credit report, they may turn you away. How Can You Curate It More Like Your Online Profiles?Make it a priorityRecognize that your financial standing matters for your own stability and security. Its not about what you should or shouldnt do, its about protecting yourself in the long term. Its not something that you can continue to ignore, because it will affect you down the line. It will determine what youre able to do and the opportunities that you have. So put it at the top of your priority listPay attention to itYou need to pay attention to your financial profile in order to be able to fix it at all. You cant fix what you dont know is broken Your first step should be to pull all of your financial information into one place. That might mean openin g aMintaccount, or it might mean just making a spreadsheet. Having all of that information in front of you will help you to understand exactly where youre departureing from. It will help you understand what changes, if any, need to be made.Next, you should be checking your credit score monthly. There are so many free options out there now, likeCredit KarmaorCredit Sesame. Chances are, you bank or credit card company also offer your credit score for free. Your credit score indicates whether or not you are trustworthy to lenders. If youre planning on applying for a loan in the near future, youll want to know what yourcredit scoreis so that you can get to work to improve it, if necessary. And no, checking your credit score doesnt hurt itFinally, check yourcredit reportthree times a year All three credit bureaus are legally required to provide you with one free credit report each year. That means that you can get three credit reports each year (one from each bureau). I like to space the m out and pull one every four months from a different bureau. Go toannualcreditreport.comto get your free credit report. This is important because your credit report is your actual financial history. Its what influences your credit score. All of the good and bad financial behavior in the past seven years will be listed on it. However, sometimes there are mistakes. Sometimes a bill that you actually paid will be erroneously sent to collections. Even more dire, sometimes someone will use your name to open fraudulent credit accounts. You wouldnt necessarily know these things if you werent pulling your credit report regularly, which means that they could hurt you without you knowing.Take actionThe most important thing to do is to do something. If you realize that your credit score is lower than youd like it to be, or you have more debt than you thought, its time to start doing something about it. It can feel overwhelming, so you should start with incremental goals. Put a debt repayment into place, contact the credit bureau about a mistake on your credit report, orhire a financial coach. 7 Legitimate Reasons You Might Not Get the Job

7 Legitimate Reasons You Might Not Get the Job7 Legitimate Reasons You Might Not Get the JobThere are lots of reasons why people dont get hired. So often it is that case that you are certain you deserve an interview, or youhave an interview and conclude it thinking that youve bagged the job, when the opposite is true. Employers only rarely will explain why they reject candidates, which only adds to your frustration. Left to conjecture, a common response is to assume the worst in others and blame them for our own situation. Dejected candidates oftensay something like, I cant get a job today because Im Fill in the blank White/Not-White, too old, been out of work too long, disabled, gay, transgender or too-whatever-else. If youve been looking for your next position without success, you might actually be a real victim of demographics, bigotry or circumstance. Note to hiring authorities If bias has influenced your decision-making, aside from the legal aspects, you are sabotaging your own company. You are depriving it of people who are highly motivated and quite capable of bringing excellence, value and loyalty to their employer. In short, youre acting in a self-limiting way by favoring your own prejudices over your own bottom line. Get over it, and diversify your workforce.Note to rejected job seekers Despite your suspicions, it might leid be about discrimination. It also might be the case that you just arent presenting yourself as effectively as you might. No matter what, you arent absolved of your responsibility to reflect on how you present yourself and always work for self-improvement. Employers are entirely justified in rejecting you when1. It doesnt seem like you care about the particular opportunity or company. People who reviewrsums for a living areaccustomed to being blasted by certain companies who build and blast genericsrsums, and charge job huntershandsomely for this service. They swap stories among themselves of the cover letters they received tha t have some other company as the intended recipient. They would far rather engage with a candidate who shows why this particular job is a great fit for both sides.2. You demonstrate sloppiness. It can take many forms, from a poor or inconsistentrsumformat, to a rumpled appearanceat an interview. It can be arsumthat isnt spell-checked, or one that still has errors present even when it has been spell-checked. It can be asloppy description of what youve done, how youve done it or what youve achieved. Employers would far prefer to engage with candidates who look and sound their best. You dont have to look like a movie star, but you should look and sound professional.3. You dont connect the dots. Employers arent interested in your entire biography. Its not their responsibility to look at yourrsumand to try to match it to a particular job opening. They can easily pass you over when you dont somehow relateyour experience, skills and successes to their needs. Never make an employer wonder The candidate says she did X. Does that mean she can do Y?4. You talk about your responsibilities rather than your successes. Whether in a cover letter, rsum or interview, stress the changes that resulted from your actions rather than simply relating what you were expected to accomplish as part of a job.5. You demonstrate that you are more concerned about what the employer can do for you rather than the value you offer. Everyone knows that you want the job and want to be well paid for doing it. But delay your questions about salary, benefits and any other special consideration you want until youve first demonstrated your ability and desire to excel at the job. Its ALL about that until the employer figures out that you are the absolute best candidate, and only then doesthe momentum shift in the other direction.6. Your nerves get the better of you. There is no getting around the fact that there is a lot riding on every job interview, whether on phone, video or in-person. But when you b ring into that situation all your anxieties, your performance is affected. When your answers ramble on without coming to a clear point, or when you fidget or show other signs of excessive nervousness, you harm your own cause. If youre the kind of person who gets rattled when youre in the hot seat, get a coach to help you through the process with lots of practice interviews.7. You do poor or no research. You can bet that your interviewer is well prepared for the conversation, and you need to be as well. Interviews are not a time for unstructured conversation. When you believe you can talk your way through anything without preparation, you sow the seeds of your own destruction. Think of every interview as being about your demonstrating that you know what youre getting into and how youwill handle it. Take time to devour information from the companys website, LinkedIn and Facebook company pages. Look at your interviewers LinkedIn profile and scan those of others who work at the company . Go about the process of discerning what you have in common with them. When you ask something that you can find out easily elsewhere you may as well say, give me that rejection letter now. But when you ask a question based on the information you already have to learn more about a given situation, initiative, etc., you can show that youre well prepared and focused on this job at this company. Of course, there are many other mistakes job seekers might make. But the point is this when you scapegoat others or your circumstances for your lack of success so far, you do nothing to bolster your chances for success in the future. When you take the time to carefully and cogently present yourself with poise, success can and likely will follow. Hiring managers want to know you’re not just generating emails from a resume and cover-letter mill. Tip 3. Address a real person - Don't ever write these words: To Whom It May Concern. Tip 4. Make sure your copy is clean - Here’s a test for you. See if you can spot the typos in these real-life job applications: Job Duties: Assisted company executives with travel arraignments. Communicate financial projects to steakholders. Education: Currently perusing a master’s degree. Tip 5. SEND US YOUR RESUME From resume to interview If you pass the resume and cover-letter phase of your search, you’ll make it to the interview. Here’s are five ways to interview to impress: Tip 1. Research the company - Do a search of the company and learn as much as you can beforehand. Do a Google search, see if any of your LinkedIn connections work there and examine the firm’s website. Do some digging to find out the history of the business and companies it competes with, and search for news stories that have been written about the organization or its top executives. Think about how you might answer the question: What do you know about our company, and why do you want to work here? Tip 2. Prepare to discuss your skills, experience and career goals - You may need to practice highlighting your qualifications and background. What’s most pertinent to a career in accounting and finance? What fits the job description? Keep in mind that employers will want to see how your expertise and efforts can contribute to company or departmental priorities. Don’t brag or be wishy-washy. Try scripting your answer to this question (remembering to be employer-centered): What are your long-term goals, and how does this job fit in with your career plan? Tip 3. Be ready for a salary discussion - Research typical salary ranges in your specific area of expertise and with your level of experience. Understanding market trends will help you know what your skills and experience are worth. Visit the Salary Center, where you'll be able to adjust pay levels for jobs in your city with the Salary Calculator, and get your own copy of the Salary Guide. Tip 4. Be punctual - Late arrivals are a sure-fire way to show a lack of care for the interviewer’s time, and while being late may seem like an obvious no-no, CFOs in the Accountemps survey said it’s one of the most common mistakes they see candidates make. It’s better to be too early than even a minute late. Try to arrive five or 10 minutes ahead of your appointment, and if you get to the office earlier than that, you can always take a walk, wait in the car or visit a local coffee shop. Tip 5. Show enthusiasm and ask questions - If you think you want this job, you should show genuine interest. One way to do that - and also to find out if this is the right situation for you - is to ask questions of the interviewer when it’s appropriate. Consider asking: What is the opportunity for advancement from this role? What do you most enjoy about working here? Can you tell me what an average day would be like? Finally, know this: You don’t have go about your job search alone. You can partner with a staffing firm, which will provide you with information and resources, and work to open doors for you.

Are you the reason youre not finding jobs

Are you the reason you're not finding jobs Are you the reason you're not finding jobs 3 ways you’re sabotaging your own job search. You’ve got your resume together, your cover letter polished, references locked and loaded. You’ve been scouring the job boards for hours, days, weeks, maybe even months â€" and still haven’t found the right fit. If this is your reality, perhaps it’s time to consider it might be you. Here are three common mistakes that could be the reason the perfect job has yet to come your way.1. You’re targeting the wrong jobs.Keep missing the mark? Maybe you’re aiming at the wrong targets. Obvious as it may seem, you’ll never land a job if you’re looking for jobs that are wrong for you. Think hard about what type of positions you’re looking for and narrow your search parameters accordingly. When looking at a job, ask yourself if the description fits your experience and skill set. Do you feel capable of performing all the listed tasks? Do you truly have the experience requested in the requirements? If the answer is no, you’re likely wasting time and energy. Nine times out of ten , poor searches yield poor results.Only apply for positions you are qualified for, and try not to be too hard-set on a specific company or position. You may want a big job to write home about with a big Fortune 500 company like Apple or Berkshire Hathaway, but realistically, there’s not enough room to accommodate the entire workforce. Instead of putting all your eggs in one basket, try spreading your net wider. Who knows, your dream job could be in a role or with a company you haven’t heard of yet!2. Your resume isn’t aligned with your professional goals. You’ve led six-figure marketing campaigns and built homes for needy families out of the kindness of your heart. You should be proud, but how does that pertain to your experience as a graphic designer? A resume focused on your goal profession is the critical resource to get your foot in the door for that coveted interview.Your resume should highlight relevant strengths and demonstrate that you have the professional skills and background required to excel in a given position. Did you play a part in making the graphics used in that six-figure marketing campaign? Did you design a room in the home you built for needy families? This is what you should be focusing on. Use strong, concise language to make your resume stand out in the over-saturated crowd. Also, make sure your resume is devoid of any outdated or superfluous information.3. You’re not using your network to its full potential As the old parable goes, it’s not what you know, but who you know. And this is truer in networking than ever before. According to Forbes, networking is still the best way to find a job in today’s career market. That doesn’t mean to hit up your extended family and entire high school class begging for work, but it’s never a bad idea to phone a friend and ask for help.Never undermine the effectiveness of network. If you have a friend or family member with connections to your desired industry, use them as a resource. Le an on past colleagues for leads to companies of interest. If possible, talk to someone in a similar role and ask about their story (a proud employee will be happy to share). If it worked for them, it could work for you.Last year was America’s best year of job growth since 1999. Great news if your New Year’s resolution is to find a career you love! Now is the time to be proactive. Remember, your job search should be your full-time job. Be open. Be receptive. You never know where you’ll find your dream job!

6 Differences Between An Internship and Apprenticeship

6 Differences Between An Internship and Apprenticeship 6 Differences Between An Internship and Apprenticeship Internships and apprenticeships both give you hands on training, but that’s where the similarities end. While completing an internship is almost expected for any college graduate seeking employment, an apprenticeship  (almost) guarantees you a high paying job once you successfully complete it. “The comparison between an internship and an apprenticeship is like comparing a row boat to a destroyer,” says Anthony  Carnevale , the Director and Research Professor of the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce. “There’s a lot of applied work with people who are highly accomplished in their field.” From the competitive nature of an apprenticeship to the pay rate, here’s a look at six ways apprenticeships differ from internships. Apprenticeships aren’t as common in the U.S. as they are in Europe, but there are a number of ones you can apply for. Often they are geared toward highly skilled technical jobs in areas such as engineering or construction. Other popular trades where you can find apprenticeships include carpentry, plumbing, electrical and telecommunications. Internships, on the other hand, are readily available for most college students through their school or university and are often generalized rather than specified for a particular trade. When it comes to an internship , most people either do it for a semester or summer and then move on to the next one or get hired full-time. With an apprenticeship, it can take years to complete and requires a full-time commitment. While there are programs that last only a year, many are multi-year in length. “Internships are generally shorter and don’t have any classroom instruction attached to it,” says John Ladd, administrator, Office of Apprenticeship, U.S. Department of Labor. “An intern gets work experience and an apprentice gets more than just work experience.” Apprenticeships are highly competitive, and one of the main reasons is because you  get paid while you learn. While you won’t be banking six figures in year one of your apprenticeship, you are going to earn more than with an  internship. Often internships give you college credits, a small stipend or something to add to your resume , where an apprenticeship gives you a salary you can live off. “The difference with an apprenticeship versus other types of training is it’s directly tied to paid employment,” says Jeff Vincent, the National Training Fund Director for the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE). Anyone who has completed an internship knows you aren’t going to have too much responsibility. Yes, you’ll get to see how the marketing department works or how a newsroom operates, but chances are you won’t be creating a marketing campaign or publishing a news article. An apprenticeship, on the other hand, gives you real on the job training in the profession you will eventually work in. “The whole deal is your seeing what you are doing for the rest of your career,” says Vincent. Internships are a great way to get exposure to corporate America and to beef up your resume, but typically what you learn during your stint with a company isn’t going to be taught in the classroom. This isn’t the case with an apprenticeship. “A key piece of an apprenticeship is that your classroom instruction relates to your occupation,” says Ladd. “You get a combination of classroom and on the job training and you’re getting paid.” In a perfect world, you would complete an internship in your senior year of college and then get a full time offer from the employer you have been working for, but that’s not always the case. In many cases, your internship won’t get you that foot in the door. However, an apprenticeship will. Since the employer is sponsoring you and spending the time to teach and train you, you are almost guaranteed to have a good paying job once you complete the program. “When you complete an internship you don’t have anything at the end that says I’m ready,” says Ladd. “When you complete an apprenticeship you’ve earned the certificate that says I’m fully proficient to do the job.” Interested in applying for an apprenticeship? Developing Millennials Into Next-Generation Leaders

Developing Millennials Into Next-Generation Leaders Developing Millennials Into Next-Generation Leaders This post originally appeared on FEI Daily. “I don’t get them.” “When I was their age …” “I don’t know how to talk to them.” Have you had any of these thoughts about members of Generation Y, the Millennials? If you have, it’s time to stop and adopt a new mindset. They’re a highly educated, innovative force that has swept through the workplace and now influences every level of their organizations. If you’re not actively recruiting, developing and working to retain Gen Y professionals, you’re losing competitive edge. Businessweek’s Matthew Philips recently reported, “According to U.S. Census data, there are more people in their twenties (44.5 million) than in their thirties (41 million), forties (41.7 million), or fifties (43.8 million).” These professionals are very much a part of your firm’s present â€" and future. What steps can you take to  groom Millennials into your next generation of leaders? Managing Millennials Start by learning what makes them tick. For most Millennials, their core desires are like those of every other generational group â€" a job that they enjoy and is a source of pride, a manager they respect and can learn from, fair compensation, and the ability to balance their professional and personal lives. At the same time, there are unique attributes common among members of this generation. For one, they frequently crave feedback. You can tap into this need and foster passion and commitment from these employees by helping them answer: Where am I going in my career? What’s important to my company? How does my role help the company reach its objectives? How can my company and my manager help me reach my goals? Ongoing communication is key. Be positive, but also genuine, providing constructive criticism as needed. Don’t wait for formal performance review periods, however. Provide your feedback in real time. Keep in mind that communication flow should be two-way. Millennials want to level the hierarchy and have a voice. Work together to target initiatives these employees feel are a fit for their skills and goals, and, when possible, assign them to leadership positions on project teams. Similarly, collaborate on identifying educational opportunities that can help them build their expertise and learn from different perspectives. Critically, make sure your technology and financial systems are up to date. The ability to work with the latest tech tools can help influence Gen Y accounting and finance professionals when deciding whether to join and stay with your organization. If you don’t continuously upgrade your systems, you risk experiencing a talent outflow instead of an inflow. Remember, this generation grew up with computer technology and is deeply ingrained with social media. Millennials understand the power of technology and recognize if you’re not current, you’re behind. Grooming Gen Y Leaders Give potential leaders you identify not just the chance to lead a project team but also the opportunity to manage key initiatives. This should go beyond just overseeing the day-to-day aspects of a project and also include setting strategy and making decisions. Fortunately for businesses, a strong desire for continuous learning is another defining characteristic of this demographic. Provide formal and informal training opportunities, focusing on the technical skills Millennials need to advance along with key nontechnical attributes, particularly leadership and communication. As they progress, incorporate those with the most potential into your succession plans. But don’t stop there. Once you’ve selected succession candidates, sit down to explain the opportunity and why you chose them. Your feedback can help them recognize their strengths and focus on improving any shortcomings, putting them on the path to develop the attributes you seek in your organization’s leaders. Identify specific steps they need to take to advance and partner on tactics for reaching each milestone. All up-and-coming leaders need mentors. Decide whether you will serve in this role and for which individuals or if you’ll ask a willing senior manager to take on this responsibility. As with employee development, the advisor should help them build both their technical and nontechnical skills. A key area of focus should be managing, including offering guidance on how to motivate people with differing personalities and preferences. Also consider reverse-mentoring arrangements, where Gen Y staff can mentor more experienced colleagues. For example, a financial analyst could show your chief accounting officer the ropes with new social media platforms or other emerging technologies. This arrangement shows employees you value their expertise and provides them another opportunity to hone their leadership skills. Focus on team-building, too, including by bringing together workers of all generations. Give your future leaders a chance to network and build rapport with contacts throughout the organization. There’s a lot they can learn about the business from colleagues with diverse backgrounds, work styles and responsibilities. Much has been written about the Millennial generation. They have unique perspectives and characteristics â€" just like any workforce demographic â€" and they are a talented, driven group eager to contribute to an employer they respect and feel is a fit for their career objectives. By understanding their chief workplace concerns, you can help them reach their goals and, at the same time, build the pipeline of leaders for your business.

Clock Ticking on Your Job Search Heres How to Prioritize

Clock Ticking on Your Job Search Here’s How to Prioritize Clock Ticking on Your Job Search Here’s How to Prioritize While looking for work may have no specific deadline per se, there are several reasons why you may benefit from learning strategies on how to prioritize and expedite the process. For example: If your job search is to find a new opportunity when you aren’t already working, you’ll want to minimize gaps in your resume and keep the period of unemployment between positions as short as possible. Snoozing often means losing in a competitive job market- if you wait too long to apply after a listing gets posted on a job board, your resume may become irrelevant once an employer receives enough relevant applications from early-bird candidates. At different parts of the interview process, the timeliness of your response to requests from the recruiter or hiring manager can make the difference between landing a job you want and getting passed over. Knowing that time is of the essence at each stage of your job search and that the clock is always ticking, candidates who know how to prioritize during the process will have a clear advantage. Consider these ideas about how to prioritize what’s most important when you feel overwhelmed and pressed for time during your job hunt: Don’t get bogged down at the research stage. With so much clickbait about jobs and companies available online, it’s easy to have researching opportunities turn into a huge time-suck. Instead of aimlessly searching on social media or corporate websites for positions that might fit, take a more targeted approach. If you’re looking for a remote position or one that offers more flexibility, for example, a job site like can take a lot of the guesswork out of the process by curating the right kinds of opportunities, positions, and locations for you, saving you tons of time. Do it right the first time. Using best practices for job search basics like resume and cover letter creation can also be time-savers and should thus be prioritized. For example, by providing quantitative data on your resume- like showing the percentage that your efforts increased sales, or by how many customers you grew your base last year- you’ll help your application stand out. By customizing job search materials for each employer so that you truly address the requirements listed in the job ad, you’ll increase the chances of interest in your candidacy. That way, you won’t waste time sending out generic applications that will end up circular filed. One key contact is worth 1,000 black hole applications. While it may not be clear initially how networking saves you time since it takes extra hours out of your schedule to meet and greet, a strategic approach to networking is important to prioritize. The reason is that when you submit your resume online without a contact, it generally goes into an applicant tracking system (ATS). Candidates sometimes coin ATS systems as the job search black hole, since they enter a general collection feed that simplifies the process for companies to compile candidate data. It’s common for job applicants to never hear back after going through the effort of such submissions. To save time and avoid the “spray and pray” method, it’s smarter to invest some of your job search energy into a more targeted form of networking. If you can network your way through your current contacts to a key introduction at a company you’re interested in working for, this can cut out many layers of fruitless, ill-targeted attempts to break through the noise. The old saying that “it’s a full-time job to look for a job” can be true. But with some thoughtful preparation and strategic prioritization, you can save yourself time and reach your career goals sooner. Expedite Your Job Search- Sign Up for Today!

11 Social Media Tips for Small Business

11 Social Media Tips for Small Business 11 Social Media Tips for Small Business 11 Social Media Tips for Small Business Rossheim, Senior Contributing Writer You’ve put together profile pages on a few popular social media sites, made occasional posts, and responded when you were aware of activity. Isn’t that enough for a small business like yours? Not according to a recent New York University study, which found that although more than half of consumers communicate with businesses via social media, only 8 percent are satisfied with those interactions. To fill that gap, here are our top social media tips on creating and maintaining a social media strategy  that’s a brand-building, rain-making machine for your business.  1) First, ask yourself some fundamental questions: Whose attention am I seeking with social media? What do I want them to do? Why am I investing time (and therefore money) in social media? Are there social-media platforms that speak to segments of my market?  2)  To succeed, your social media engagement  must be part and parcel of your overall sales and marketing approach. “Social media is the vehicle, not the strategy,” says Lisa Tilt, president of Full Tilt Consulting in Atlanta.  3) When choosing social media sites to extend your company brand,  marketing and sales efforts, start small and be selective. Match the demographics of your market to social platforms. Before you build a profile on yet another social site, make sure that you have the resources (people and time) to post consistently and respond speedily to all customer and prospect activity. Measure the effectiveness of your choices with social media analytics tools.  4) Early in the game, choose and use a social media management platform like Hootsuite or Tweetdeck to coordinate all of your social accounts and RSS feeds from one screen, schedule posts, assign tasks to your employees, and so on.  5) “Having a handful of trusted employees that can help disseminate your company’s message will make implementation more manageable,” says Cheryl Foster, marketing manager for accounting firm Brown Smith Wallace in St. Louis. Even if you don’t hire a dedicated social media officer, choose carefully who does this work. You’re looking for social-savvy, energetic folks who know your business, understand its messaging, and can write in the clear, friendly voice of your company, while never losing their cool. Not always so easy to find.  6)  As social media expert David Meerman Scott recommends, use social media monitoring to track your company’s social-media presence all over the Web. This will enable you to make sure customer activity isn’t going unanswered, that your social media communiqués are staying on message, and that any false or negative postings about your company receive a measured, prompt and positive response.  7) As Ann Handley recommends with social media marketing  to go very light on selling and on small talk that’s not related to what your business has to offer. Instead, be helpful.  Jerry Sullivan, owner of Framework Media Strategies in Fords, N.J, agrees. “The most successful messages are the ones that answer questions that you can anticipate from your customers,” says Sullivan.  8) But remember, as with any branding, marketing or selling effort, your social media activity must have the ultimate goal of gaining and retaining customers and increasing sales.“Too many companies just throw something up against the proverbial social media wall, hoping something will stick,” says Paul Kurnit, professor of marketing at Pace University’s Lubin School of Business in New York.  9) Integrate your social media marketing with your customer relationship management and sales systems. Don’t let your social media be an island. Don’t lose track of leads generated by social media, and don’t treat customer communications casually just because they arrive via these informal media. 10) Formulate a social media policy, however simple, and educate your employees on what the policy means to them. 11) Measure your social media results. Experiment with your marketing approach, your social offers, your choice of social platforms. Then measure again. Your small  company will make a sizable investment of time in social media, and you need to see a return, not just an accumulation of fans and followers of unknown value. “The biggest problem with small business social media marketing is wasting time,” says Bill Corbett, Jr., president of Corbett Public Relations in Floral Park, N.Y. How I started my independent podcast

How I started my independent podcast How I started my independent podcast I recently received a “side hustle” style career conundrum from Rachel from Minneapolis on the Bossed Up podcast hotline, who wants to know how to start her own podcast. So today’s post is all about my journey to launching and growing the Bossed Up podcast as an independent show over the last year â€" and everything I’ve learned along the way.Know Your GoalsFollow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Podcasting has been called  â€œthe new blogging,”  for how it’s become an efficient way to communicate regularly with people who share your areas of interest. And while I love podcasting, keep in mind: only about  36%  of the US population has ever listened to a podcast, so it might not be the right channel for everyone. The way I look at podcasting is that it compliments the writing I do on the Bossed Up  blog, the news I send out via our email list, and the  community  we’v e created on social media. However, you approach podcasting, make sure you’re clear about your goals and enjoy the process. It’s not easy to make any money at all through podcasting (although I’ll share some best practices for doing so at the end of today’s post), so I encourage you to get crystal clear about your goals before venturing into this process. For me, I got lucky. I was recruited into the podcasting world when Cristen Conger and Caroline Ervin stepped down from their post at the HowStuffWorks network, where they created and co-hosted  Stuff Mom Never Told You. After 8 years, Cristen and Caroline left to start their own independent show,  Unladylike. At the time, I was able to negotiate a great deal for myself, recommend my best possible collaborator (Bridget Todd), and had the pleasure of co-hosting Stuff Mom Never Told You for the 9 months we had together. But when management changed at the network and our deal fell apart, I wasn’t willing to work for just over a third of what they’d initially been paying us, so I left.I knew, however, that just because I was leaving Stuff Mom Never Told You didn’t mean I wanted to leave the world of podcasting altogether. Over those 9 months I’d grown to love the creative challenge and the conversations we were able to start with listeners â€" including many of you! I didn’t want to work with a network that treated its workers incredibly poorly, so I set out on the intimidating undertaking of launching my own independent production instead.Establish Your ConceptThink about it: what could you talk about…a LOT? Obviously, you’re going to want to have a focus to your show, but not  too  narrow a subject matter that you’ll run out of things to say.Would you want a co-host? Or not? Co-hosts can make a show wonderfully dynamic, but also requires a lot more back-end planning, communication, and logistics.Would you want to produce podcast series â€" like a limited release of 5-10 episodes all at onc e? Or a more ongoing, weekly format? Many creators find the series format to be more freeing, in that they’re able to build in breaks and not get overwhelmed with deadlines, but after 9 months of producing 2 episodes a week with Stuff Mom Never Told You, I was confident in my abilities to opt for the weekly format instead.Establishing your concept is a fun and creative endeavor, but don’t forget to consider production complexities. For instance, I love ending each Tuesday episode of the Bossed Up podcast by featuring a listener-submitted boss move! It’s an inspiring and uplifting way to showcase our community. But, if I’m being honest with you, it’s made our production process kind of challenging, because we constantly have to persuade our listeners to call in and brag on themselves â€" which is not the easiest thing to do. In fact, there was one episode in which we didn’t have boss moves to share! So when coming up with fun, creative concepts like this one, keep in mind how much effort it might take to actually make it happen.Another reason I love featuring listener-submitted boss moves  and  career conundrums is because it’s important to think about how your show will incorporate vocal diversity. Listening to one person’s soliloquy can get, well, boring. So when I set out to start this podcast  without  a co-host, I knew it was going to be important to feature interviews and listener voicemails to add to the vocal diversity in each episode. Finally, when thinking about how you’ll set up each episode, my friend  Gretta Cohn, who is the Founder of  Transmitter Media,  gave me this advice when I just starting out: think in  segments. What’s your first segment of each episode going to sound like? What’s your middle segment? What are recurring segments you can bring in every now and then to surprise your listeners? What will your closing segment always involve? Listeners like recognizable patterns, so consider segments your building blocks fo r creating each episode.Equipment SoftwareWhen it comes to equipment, there’s a wide spectrum of audio devices you can use, but you really don’t need pro-level stuff to produce a great-sounding podcast. Don’t get me wrong, audio quality matters, but it doesn’t take a pricey mic to make it a reality. I know Myleik Teele of the  MyTaughtYou  podcast uses a simple handheld mic with a USB output that plugs right into her computer. Here’s a link to  some great mic options  from The Podcast Host at all different price ranges for you to consider.A few more optional pieces of equipment that can take your microphone game to the next level include snagging  a mic stand  and/or  boom arm, which help hold the microphone for you, and  a pop filter  which is a little screen that softens some of the harsher, fricative sounds in human speech. You’ll also need software to capture your audio as you record it. I like to use  Zencastr, an online service that costs me about $20 a month, and can record my audio  and  my interview guests’ audio on two separate tracks, which is important for editing purposes. You can also edit your files straight in the Zencastr platform, but I pay an audio editor who uses more sophisticated Adobe software instead. There are lots of options for capturing your audio files. You can use  Audacity  or  GarageBand, which cost nothing. You can use  Zoom  or  Skype  as well. Whichever software you opt for, remember it always takes a little fiddling and experimentation to figure it out at first. You can often google you way to tutorials online specific to whichever audio platform you use.Personally, I especially appreciate the fact that by paying for Zencastr, that $20 a month also includes customer service and troubleshooting, which has saved me a bunch of time when I’ve run into technical challenges.Editing Your AudioOnce you capture your audio files, you’ve got put all your segments together in one final .mp3 or .wav file that’s ready t o be listened to. But here’s the thing: when I started podcasting on the HowStuffWorks network, they had in-house audio engineers who would do all that editing for me.When I transitioned into hosting my own independent production, I knew that my time and talents were best spent focusing on content creation, not editing audio files. This can be extremely detail-oriented and time-consuming work, so I did a lot of research interviewing a bunch of different editors to work with as an investment in the show. All that research led me to Josh at  PodcastGuyMedia, who’s been an absolute delight to work with. If it’s at all possible for you to outsource your editing, I can’t recommend Josh enough. In fact, when we put this episode together, Josh kindly offered a discount to any of you who reach out to him via http://podcastguymedia.com/bossedup. He’s offering 25% off the first month of editing and/or 1 hr..That said, I also know plenty of podcasters, including  Kathlyn Hart  of the  Kathlyn Hart Show,  who do their own editing. It’s definitely a skill you can learn, and I recommend these more in-depth tutorials from Pat Flynn at  podcastingtutorial.com  to learn more.Publish Your PodcastNow, once you’ve edited your final podcast file and you’re happy with how it all came together, you need a hosting service to publish your show.I use  Simplecast, a hosting platform that costs me $12 a month, to upload the raw audio file (in a .wav or .mp3 format), and then add metadata.Metadata in behind-the-scenes information that’s associated with each episode, including the title, any related tags or search terms, and both a one-line description and a more detailed description with show notes. By adding this metadata to the hosting platform, Simplecast then communicates all that information via an RSS feed to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, GooglePlay, Stitcher Radio, and all the other places where you get your podcasts.I also like Simplecast, because it allows me to embed a little player widget into every Bossed Up blog post that features my podcast. That way, I can share a link to my blog on social media to encourage people to listen to the show, instead of linking directly to iTunes or any single podcast player.MonetizationOnce you can prove that your podcast reaches a good deal of people (typically 2500 downloads per episode is the minimum), which you can measure using a hosting platform like Simplecast, advertisers might be interested in partnering with you. There are 3 ways I’ve seen this done: You can sell ads yourself.  This is something  I do offer  and have gotten a little bit of interest that way, but not much. I set flat rates for my ads, make sure the advertiser is peddling something I truly love and think you’d love too, and then my assistant Kirby and I write a script to show what I plan to say for their pre-approval. Work with an agency.  These are third-party businesses that work more closely with bigger brands and companies and offer up advertising on a variety of podcasts. They typically earn a percentage of your ad revenue (around 30% is common) and send you advertisers on the regular. I recently started working with  TrueNative Media  in this capacity and appreciate how they manage the process with advertisers for me. You can pitch your show to a network.  This is probably the hardest path forward because you have to convince a major media network that your show should be one of their family of shows, via a proposal. This is also my least favorite / least recommended path because the podcast network landscape is currently very volatile and somewhat unpredictable.  However,  if you’re fortunate enough to get past all that, you can make some bigger bucks going this route, as networks take an active role in helping all their shows grow â€" especially through cross-promotion on other network shows â€" and they take a very hands-on role in managing advertisers and production for you. Whichever route you pursue, know that you should always retain the right to  not work with any advertiser you don’t like.  I’ve turned down offers from Modcloth ever since they were bought out by Walmart, a company I have major ethical concerns about. I’ve passed on advertisers whose products are confusing or just don’t seem all that valuable to me, so I wouldn’t want to recommend. And I’ve passed on offers to peddle skinny tea and other products I find overtly harmful and contrary to my personal values.More ResourcesI hope this longer-than-usual post has given you some helpful first steps to take when pursuing your own podcast, but for even more support, check out this awesome book,  So You Want to Start A Podcast?  â€" which I recently stumbled upon by  Kristen Meinzer, one of the women behind the awesome  By the Book  podcast.I also recommend attending the annual  WERK IT Women’s Podcasting Festival,  hosted by  WNYC Studios, and tuning in to their  podcast of the sa me name, which includes live recordings of all the main stage presentations from the festival. You might even stumble upon  my talk  from a few years back when I delivered a talk that goes into greater detail about how to make money through podcasting. My last recommendation is to subscribe to  Hot Pod, the best podcast industry newsletter out there, written by Nick Quah, with whom I share a book editor. My editor at Hachette, Colleen, who you heard on the Bossed Up podcast about how I got my book deal, is currently editing Nick’s forthcoming book all about the podcast industry. His newsletter is great for keeping up with all the mergers and acquisitions happening in the still-pubescent podcasting media industry. What other podcast questions do you have?I’d love to hear from you! Stop the grind a realistic solution to halt hustle culture

Stop the grind a realistic solution to halt hustle culture Stop the grind a realistic solution to halt hustle culture The first time I had an ocular migraine, I thought I was having a stroke. For the uninitiated, ocular migraines can cause temporary vision loss, kaleidoscopic visions, as well as being extraordinarily painful. And it turns out, sitting in front of a computer under fluorescent lighting all day is what triggers them. Unfortunately, a major part of “hustle culture” is how much time you put in  at the office.  Are you toiling late into the night? Do you rise and grind at 5 a.m.? Are you going to that WeWork every day? Do you show up to the Equinox, which is conveniently located next door to the WeWork, at 7 a.m.?If not, your team may think you’re not putting in enough work.  Erin Griffith calls this “performative workaholism,” and like her, I believe it needs to stop.People have an inherent need to compete, but as everyone tries to outperform each other, it’s essentially a race to the bottom- the bottom being burnout, poor performance and the occasional blinding headache. Not on ly does hustle culture, or what  Alexis Ohanian has coined, “Hustle Porn,” affect your quality of life, but it also affects the quality of the work you do. As a peer, I wouldn’t be impressed if you were up until 3 a.m. working on a pitch deck the night before we needed it.  Sleep deprivation  is terrible for your health and your performance- and it makes you less present and coherent during the workday.Sadly, the idea that constantly working (or appearing to work) is a desirable trait for entrepreneurs and employees has gained a lot of traction in recent years. And, to take it a step further, the idea of performing your unrealistic work-life balance via social channels like Instagram and Twitter has also taken hold. Phone calls on the beach? Business meetings at a ski resort? Those are the new expectations for productive work.Personally, I’ve founded three companies and have both participated in (and eventually been repelled by) the glorification of hustle. I’ve also come to realize it doesn’t have to be like this. Companies can- and should- actually work toward sustainable, healthy practices in the workplace. Here’s how to understand this toxic culture and turn it around:Understand that hustle culture comes from a place of fear.  Very few people actually want to be in this cycle of performative exhaustion. Most people are simply coming from a place of fear. They work hard because they think what they’re doing is never going to be enough. They’re afraid their competitor will outpace them. Afraid they won’t be able to create a return on a big investment. Afraid they’ll lose their job to someone who promises to fit an extra two hours into the workday.I understand that fear all too well. I was mulling over an offer to co-found a company, which I recently declined, that had several red flags. After an exploratory call about the project, I immediately received about a dozen emails from the person. It all felt very erratic and poorly thought out. A nd yet, I could feel the fear pushing me towards taking the job anyway. A few million in the bank from a Fortune 50 customer, additional customers and VCs lined up. I would have been settling, but I would have felt secure for a while. Not everyone feels like they can turn that type of offer down, which is why hustle culture continues to thrive even as it burns out talented individuals at a rapid clip.People are afraid of what will happen if they opt out.To avoid it from the start, companies have to rethink how to define success.  Hustle culture starts at the top.Venture capitalists investing in a startup are looking for massive growth in order to reap a return on their investment. That puts pressure on the founders to reach “unicorn” status. They feel like they have to do everything, to be everywhere at once. The weight of the world is on their shoulders, and they respond to it by working harder. In turn, that filters down to the team.So people start showing up earlier. They cut out their morning walk or their evening workout to fit more time in at the office. They check their email obsessively and reply at all hours. They eliminate the healthy boundaries between their life and their job. They step on stage and join the hustle performance.Eventually, the entire company culture becomes much more competitive and political, and value is placed on productivity metrics rather than quality or sustainability of output. One day, the founders look around and wonder what happened to the company they wanted to build.Fortunately, there are other ways of running a company. The methods don’t have the glamorous facade of a “unicorn,” but they are healthier for everyone involved. It’s very much possible to build a successful company by eschewing VC investment or strictly hierarchical structures. It involves collaborating with people you like, experimenting with  organizational models  that make sense for your team and taking care of yourself. It also requires you to trust your team and focus on projects rather than productivity. You can say, “We value culture.” You can say, “We value team autonomy.” But none of that matters if you don’t structure your company in a way that defines success as more than just performative workaholism.Once you find the right balance, success is easier and more sustainable.  Work shouldn’t be a constant struggle.I’m not saying that work won’t be difficult at times, or that you shouldn’t persevere when the going gets tough. I’m saying that it shouldn’t always feel like you have to abandon your life outside of the company in order to be successful.Success won’t be simple, but it must become easier over time. When you’re truly in your flow state and aligning with the people around you, you feel energized rather than drained. While it’s difficult to manifest something new into the world, that doesn’t mean you have to always be miserable and working ridiculous hours. When that’s the case, it may be time to take a step back and ask whether you’re the right person for your job, or whether you’re on the right path at all. There’s no reason to sacrifice your health for a twisted, never-satisfied definition of success. You don’t need to hustle yourself into a breakdown. You just need to find something that energizes you and pursue it in a way that enhances (rather than destroys) your wellbeing. This article first appeared on Forbes.
